The world was on fire. Yeqon trailed Kea on foot, threading through the pillars of Göbekli Tepe, out across the grassy plains that capped their underground home. Char filled each breath. The air burned down his throat. He scooped up a fleeing human by the arm and took to the air. The man dangled precariously below him, like an eagle with its prey. Yeqon flew beyond the portal, across the peak of a craggy, rock-strewn hill to the north, following the excrement smell of fear-ridden humans.

"Run!" He growled and dropped the man who dared not look back, but scrambled onto wobbly legs, chasing hurried footprints. The earth rumbled, the human fell, got up and tumbled down the far side of the hill as the ground shifted more violently.

"Fuck!" Yeqon looked up. The sky roiled. Something flickered beyond the thick blanket of clouds. Something was beyond their angry churning, something or someone was on its way.

"What? What is it now?" He screamed to the sky, his face illuminated, his muscles sharpened. His innards felt tight and uncomfortable under his skin. Something beyond his control relinquished Yeqon to an unusual feeling… fear.

Yeqon took a burning breath and flew back towards Kea and Kira, crossing paths with dozens of his own kind who dashed about picking up humans, risking themselves against something unseen, something absolutely not of this world.

What's going on? Mind chatter was chaos. He couldn't understand what anyone was saying.

Göbekli Tepe burned a bright orange under a great wall of fire that had set the distant forest alight; a hellish, haloed smudge on the horizon. Göbekli Tepe's portal light stuttered, the hum of it like nails drawn across a rock. The sky glimmered; bruised clouds roiled under a hungry wind.

"What's going on?" Kira yelled over the howling.

"I… don't… Oh no!" Kea looked up; the clouds peeled away as though melting from the sky.

"Yeqon! Is this your doing?" Kea screamed at him as he looked up, his face fell, his breaths quickened, and for a singular moment, terror iced his veins and blurred his vision with tears. He stared at a widening aperture opening between Earth and the universe. He sucked a deep breath, bit his lip so hard that blood trickled down his chin. His eyes widened as four bright lights appeared, rapidly growing larger by the second. He drew another breath, now anger churned beneath his skin, the heat of resentment dried his eyes.

"No! I told you, Kea… I didn't lay with that woman! I have never lain with any human in that way!" Yeqon yelled, teeth bared, spittle foaming in the corners of his mouth.

They all ducked as the windstorm drove biting sand into their flesh.

"What do we do?" Kira cried, hugging the now screaming infant closer to her chest.

Theus appeared behind her. He pointed sharply upwards. "We run, we hide, we hope to see the light of another day before they arrive!" Theus peered skywards again; the four glimmering lights grew bigger, more luminous by the second. He pushed Kea on, out of the shadow of Göbekli Tepe.
